Pekin Winter Wonderland

Conklin's Barn II Dinner Theatre

Holiday Family Event: The Nutcracker Ballet in Morton

On Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Berta Frank Performing Arts Center, you can treat your loved ones to the glittering, shimmering spectacle of the holiday cheer brought by the Nutcracker. Enchanting and lyrical, magical and mesmerizing, the Nutcracker Ballet in Morton is a holiday tradition honored by time that combines dance and music into a dreamy holiday show. As wonderful as the season of Christmas is, the Nutcracker truly is a real-life fairy tale.

This is the second annual production of the Nutcracker Ballet and will be performed by the Cornerstone Academy of Performing Arts in partnership with The Morton Fine Arts Association. So whether you're currently living in Morton, or just visiting during the holidays, the Nutcracker Ballet is wonderful event that's definitely worth seeing.

Under the Artistic Direction of Rebekah von Rathonyi, shows will be at 2pm and 7:30 pm on December 14 and at 2pm on December 15. The show features seventy members of the cast with kids from Bettendorf IA, Peoria, Monmouth, Galesburg, Morton, Pekin, Metamora and Eureka.

The Nutcracker tells the story of the Eve of Christmas at the Stahlbaum’s home. Decorated with ornaments for Christmas, including a majestic Christmas tree they home is also filled with mistletoe, stockings, wreathes and ornaments. With their children Fritz and Clara, the Stahlbaums are preparing for their yearly Christmas party. A dancing celebration happens when the guests finally arrive at the party.

The surprise arrival of the toymaker, Godfather Drosselmeyer frightens Fritz but not Clara. The toymaker gives all the children gifts but Clara receives the best gift of all, which is the Nutcracker. As the night goes on, you can then join Clara and her Prince Nutcracker as they travel through sugar plum fairies, dancing snowflakes, a winter wonderland and an epic battle between mischievous ice and heroic toy soldiers.

You can then follow Clara on her journey with the Nutcracker to the Land of Sweets from the family party. You will see dancing dolls, a lot of gorgeous Christmas scenes and stunning sets. With the music by Tchaikovsky, you may soon realize that Christmas would not be the same without the Nutcracker.

As one of the most premier events in Morton, the performance will also include three of New York’s Rochester City Ballet guest artists. Tickets are available at www.CornerstoneBalletPeoria.com and start at $26. Seat options can range from the orchestra, mezzanine or grand tier.

5 Ways to Enjoy the Halloween Scene in Peoria, IL

With Halloween a mere few days away, there's no reason to wait around for trick-or-treating. This year in Peoria, IL, there are a number of different Halloween events that children of all ages - and parents - can enjoy.

Wildlife "Scary" Park

This two-day event held at the Wildlife Prairie State Park takes place on Friday, October 25 until Sunday, October 27. From 5PM until 9PM, visitors can experience real life animals, hay rides and a number of different Halloween-themed events, in one of the Midwest's most beautiful state parks. The 2,000 acre green space is home to over 150 different animals, and several will be on display during this event for the whole family. Parking is free and admission is $8 per person. Babies under one year of age can gain access to the park for free.


Witches Walk

The Fondulac Farm Park hosts a unique "witches walk" on Friday, October 25. The walk starts at 6:00PM and runs through until 8:00PM. Farm buildings will be decorated, and the farm's general store will be open for treats. This unique experience is ideal for children of all ages. Admission starts at $2.50 for children under 16, and $3.00 for children over 16 and adults.


Forest Park Nature Center Creature of the Night

On Friday, October 25th, take a spooky trip into the Forest Park Nature Center where you and your children can learn all about creepy creatures such as bats, owls and other nocturnal animals. This guided night walks kicks-off at 7PM and also includes a camp-fire, trick or treating and Halloween arts and crafts. There will be refreshments and scary stories will also be read by local speakers. Kids under 12 are encouraged to turn up in fancy dress, where this year's theme will be "nature". The best costume wins a prize. Tickets are $3 er person or $2 per person for CORE members. A flash-light is also recommended!


Halloween at the "Boo-seum"

Also on Friday, October 25th, the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum hosts its annual Halloween party. This year's event will include a costume competition, science shows, a scavenger hunt, and depending on the weather, hayrides. There will also be a hot dog dinner in the museum's cafe. Parents and children can both dress up in fancy dress for the party, which takes place from 6:00PM through to 8:30PM. Admission is $5 per person, and it advisable to book ahead.


Peoria Riverfront Museum Halloween Hunt

Taking place on Sunday, October 27, the Peoria Riverfront Museum Halloween Hunt is a unique scavenger hunt ideal guaranteed to delight young children from three to twelve years. The Halloween Hunt is being held at the popular Peoria Riverfront Museum from 12 noon through to 5PM. There will be a special prize for the best-dressed visitor, and children are encouraged to dress up as their favorite scary characters.

Admission is $10 for children who are members, and $15 for children who are non-members. One adult gains free admission with every child ticket. Both parents and children can catch one of two scary screenings of the movies Hotel Transylvania and Monster House in the museum's Giant Screen Theater, as well as a stunning planetarium light show. If that wasn't enough, an incredible bat presentation will take place with real bats from 3PM.

Morton Pumpkin Festival

Glen Oak Zoo
